Overheard (2008 - 2009)

“Wherever we are, what we hear is mostly noise. When we ignore it, it
disturbs us. When we listen to it, we find it fascinating.” — John Cage

Overheard is an extension of Public Privacy: the visual investigation has
turned into an aural one. I listen to the cell phone conversations that take
place in public, and copy down the words of these half-dialogues. These
fragments become the content for my artwork; I translate them into
typographic and auditory forms that capture the routine, shared aspects of
our public — and private — identities. I am working on three projects: a
media installation that surrounds the viewer/listener with snippets of daily
conversations; an interdisciplinary play titled “Talk Soon” with choreographer
Martha Mason and playwright Joy Tomasko; and an interactive performance
piece with multimedia artist/programmer Michael Chladil based on his “Rope
& Pulley,” a physical, modular, live performance system for controlling audio
and visual media.
