In 1978, with a background in fine arts and design, Wendy
Richmond began mixing traditional media with new technology at MIT's
Visible Language Workshop. Bringing her expertise in art and design
to the new developments in visual communication, she participated in
the formation of design and technology companies and co-founded the
Design Lab at WGBH-TV. In 1983, she began writing her column in
Communication Arts magazine in which she provokes inquiry in
visual communication. Her topics range from the collaborative
process to cultural filters to media as a support for
creativity.
Always committed to collaboration and erasing boundaries between
disciplines, Richmond now pursues these diverse interests as an
artist, educator, and writer. She describes her photography, which
she has exhibited internationally, as single-frame movies. Her
research focuses on elevating the status of art making and
supporting expression through visual media. Richmond is the
recipient of a Rockefeller Foundation residency in Bellagio, Italy,
a LEF Foundation grant, a National Endowment for the Arts grant, the
2002 Hatch Award for Creative Excellence, and numerous design and
art awards including the American Association of University Presses,
Boston Art Director's Club, American Institute of Graphic Arts, and
New England Book Builders. She has served on the AIGA National Board
of Directors and has participated in numerous judgings for visual
communications awards. Richmond is author of Design &
Technology: Erasing the Boundaries and Overneath: a
collaboration of photography and dance. She is an editor and
columnist for Communication Arts magazine, for which she has
written over 130 columns.
