Literacies of Creativity and Expression
Wendy
Richmond We live in a society in which we, as individuals,
have access to an ever-growing array of media tools and distribution
outlets. But do we use these assets to support creativity, learning, and
expression--our own as well as other's? In this studio course, we explore
the creative potential of diverse media through three areas. First, media
for creativity and expression: Through hands-on projects, we explore
expression through various media, including print, photography,
three-dimensional construction, video, audio, and/or computer-based media.
Participants will work on group and individual projects. Second, learning
the languages of expression in a constructivist environment: The course
structure pays particular attention to providing an environment that
supports participation, collaboration, self-motivation, and flexibility.
Feedback from one's peers is an essential form of support. Participants
will create projects in diverse media and, through assignments and
activities, occupy the roles of creator, subject, and audience. Because
this class does not include "how-to" instruction, students are expected to
acquire and share skills for their projects. Third, representing self and
other: Media can support understanding and representation of ourselves as
well as others. How does our creative use of diverse media help us to
experience empathy?
